TSUNAMI RELIEF

The first PIMA delegation, headed by the General secretary PIMA Dr Iqbal Khan and four other members namely Professor Zafar Ullah Kundi, Dr Anas farhan Qazi, Dr. Nadeem Ahmed Kiani and Engineer Imtiaz Ahmed, left on 9th January 2005 for Jakarta. Very next day these volunteer doctors arrived in Banda Aceh, an area most devastatingly smacked by tsunami disaster.

Our doctors worked day and night in providing medical relief to the victims and gathered very useful first hand information about real prevailing situations regarding estimation of human, economic loss and amount of actual relief work by the international community against tall claims in media. Our doctors also made a realistic assessment of the basic requirements to alleviate the trauma from the survivors of Tsunami in Indonesia.

There are over 250 international NGO’s working in the affected areas in Ache province. Out of these, only four Muslim NGOs are worth mentioning, the rest are Christian missionaries with special hidden agendas embedded in the enigma of relief work and service to humanity. In particular, zeal has been observed in capturing the orphans. Though the Indonesian government has prudently decided not to allow any one to take these children abroad but these missionaries are too clever and experienced in Bosnia and Kosovo in converting Muslim children to Christians. Therefore they are extremely busy in organizing orphanages for these children within the country. The medical workers flushed Bunda Aceh from all over the world, particularly form the catholic organization of Europe and Australia. The trained and professionally incompetent doctors playing with health and lives of the innocent victims left behind very high rate of infections and irreparable loss to the ailing population of Aceh.

According to official sources about 175,000 people perished in this disaster, while 75,000 are missing. Dead bodies are still buried under the debris. The Al Rehman largest mosque in Ache, seven Kilometers away from sea shore) accommodated 400 dead bodies after Tsunami, and a few hundred yards from this mosque, one can see many dead bodies still need to be buried. So far the road to the sea cost have been cleared. Rest of the rinsed-to-ground debris needs to be cleared. The process of clearing debris is too slow due to the lack of necessary machinery and working tools. One can see few bulldozers and trucks busy in removing the debris and buried human bodies. The area is smelly and there is great danger of epidemics. Already, respiratory and gastrointestinal infections are rapidly spreading and have taken many lives. Human health issues have never been addressed in actual spirit. We have seen many natural disasters and many human atrocities, but loss of this magnitude has not been seen during last 100 years. Out of a total of 2 million population of Ache province, 2/3rd population has been affected by Tsunami. More than 200,000 people are reported dead or missing over 600,000 people are homeless and their every belonging is destroyed. About 51 thousand survivors have missed their family members. Many parents are searching their children and several thousand children are looking for their parents.

The problem of orphans is of high magnitude. Opportunist Christian missionaries are hunting innocent children and taking them to Djakarta in the so-called orphanages organized by these missionaries. According to official sources over three thousand children ranging from 2 months to 10 years age have been taken away by these missionaries. We were informed by the Director of a teaching hospital which was largely destroyed by Tsunami and only two wards were renovated to function a day before we reached this hospital. Almost all the medical equipment in this hospital is destroyed, some students and teaching staff of the hospital are missing. We were astonished to learn that there is neither a pediatric ward nor an out patient paediaritic clinic in this hospital but there are nine pediatric specialist from Christian missionaries, but not a single adult physician. The ground floor of the hospital containing major medical equipment is full of mud and dirt brought in by Tsunami. The official buildings like provincial health ministry, health directorate and other offices are rinsed to ground.

There are three hospitals in the city, a medical school, a university and 17 health centers. Only one military hospital of 100 beds, a small private hospital of twenty beds and 4 out of 17 medical centers are functioning at the moment. The civic centers and municipal infra structure is not existing. If one travels down to the sea shore, the only mosque standing at the sea shore has also damaged, but still it can be seen. Small ships and boats are thrown 6-7 km from the sea shore and whole area is fuming with the smell of decaying human bodies. We have seen many bodies floating in ponds and many dogs eating human bodies. The tall claims by the world bodies, contribution in relief work by the international agencies and foreign governments and sharing hands with Indonesian brethren are merely media game and propaganda tools to bluff the international community. UN and its subjugate bodies are mere spectators and actually deceiving those who actually want to extend helping hands. According to central office of KKI (Indonesian humanitarian organizations for Aceh), not a single western country has actually participated in the relief work by any means. All the western countries and particularly United States are interested to send the troops in the area. According to very reliable sources, the Government of Indonesia has not allowed them to enter because of intelligence of helping separatist movement by these armies. Mainly Indonesian army was seen, actively busy in removing debris and recovering dead bodies. Malayan army personnel and army vehicles were also seen helping the Indonesian army. Justice and welfare party volunteers from all over the country set an unprecedented example in real relief and welfare of the victims. I can quote an example here. I was working in military hospital of Bunda Aceh and we had an orphan child with suspected pneumthorax and we wanted chest X-Ray to be done for this seriously sick patient but could not do it for two days. We were too desperate and asked our host doctor Dr Sefa for help who suggested asking a Justice party volunteer. We did the same and the X-Rays were done promptly. One can see this army of volunteers with green jackets busy in removing debris, burring dead bodies, helping refugees and according any help to restore the civic facilities in the city. We have seen justice party workers cleaning streets and helping sick people without any tall claims and advertisements. These volunteers are regularly replaced by fresh team already waiting for the call from the organization. Medical relief is being provided by over 250 NGOs from all over the world but considerable input from these NGOs in this field have not been observed because of various reasons, but major factor in the failure to provide adequate medical relief to people is lack of coordination among these organization, non-availability of medicines and equipment. They have not actually come for this purpose. These NGOs have their own agenda for which they are striving at their best.

The work of Indonesian Red Crescent is marvelous. The dedicated teams of doctors, nurses and paramedics are effectively managing three field hospitals, seventeen medical posts and several medical camps in the refugee camps. The net work of IRC assisted by IMANI and Justice Party has actually taken over the actual load in medical relief work. IRC is planning for preventive work and a team of epidemiologists is working very hard in executing a plan for prevention of communicable disease and water borne infections. They are also planning to reconstruct the local hospital. This is the only medical relief body trying to reach to far flung devastated areas and islands. We strongly feel that they need a helicopter urgently for their relief work in the neglected areas. All NGOs and international organizations are crowded in Bunda Aceh and have no access to the remote areas. We decided to collaborate with Indonesian Red Crescent and signed an MOU with IRC. According to our commitment with IRC, we shall provide an ambulance to IRC. We are also collaborating in running of 25 bedded field hospitals in lambaro banda Aceh. Our team of expert doctors with all the necessary medical equipment and medicine is already working in this hospital.

For our doctors and relief workers of Al Khidmat (Pakistan), we have hired a house in Banda Aceh and established a base camp. Al-Khidmat Pakistan is also collaborating with PIMA and providing financial assistance to execute medical relief in Tsunami hit areas. We have received generous donations from Al Khidmat Pakistan and Al Khidmat is ready to continute this collaboration on long-term basis.PIMA also decided to collaborate in orphan brought up and education programme of Al Sharfia University Djakarta which has decided to take 500 orphans and 200 students from Ache. PIMA decided to sponsor 100 orphans in the first instance and later increase this number according to the availability of donors. Recently our mission in Banda Ache has set up a medical centre in collaboration with KKI – The Humanitarian organization for Ache. We are preparing to send a fresh team comprising seven doctors this team will replace the previous one. We also intend to contribute in sponsoring 200 orphans from Ache on long term basis and will also take part in rehabilitation of the health infrastructure in the affected region.
